Details:
Chapel Hill area band Old 86 announces the independent release of their sophomore album, Heat Lightning. Recorded primarily in the Summer of 2010, the album features songs written and performed live since the release of the band’s debut album Keep It Goin’ in 2008. Heat Lightning was recorded by Thom Canova (Dexter Romweber, Tom Maxwell, The Old Ceremony) at Studio M in Durham, NC, as well as singer/guitarist Daniel Fields at his house in Chatham County. The album features vibraphone and marimba on several songs, courtesy of The Old Ceremony’s Mark Simonsen. Heat Lightning also includes contributions from a variety of the band’s close friends, from the trumpet parts to the artwork and album layout. Even the mastering was performed by a friend of the band, Tim Carless, at Mockin’ Bird Recording in Chapel Hill.
Heat Lightning contains 12 original songs drafted as early as 2007, which have become staples of the band’s live show. Old 86 is a band full of multi-instrumentalists, and as a result, each song has it’s own unique flavor. From richly textured ballads (Permanent Guests, Les Fleurs Du Mal, Here it Comes), to wah-drenched Funk (Modeliste, Giddown) to straight ahead Rock ‘n’ Roll (I Don’t Think So, Slaughterhouse Blues), Heat Lightning melds a variety of styles and influences into a cohesive finished product that is both familiar and brand new.
