Details:
If the laws of time and space could be bent as to put them in any era of popular music, then The Superficials might fit best in 1960’s Bakersfield. Like the Wilco of today or The Flying Burrito Bros. of yesterday, they sit somewhere between Classic Rock and Classic Country. World-wise and with Southern roots, they’re hip enough for an L.A. crowd, but grounded enough to feel at home in Nashville. If you’re thinking Americana, you’re only half-right, as they can segue from folky to funky faster than you can finish a shot.

More than just “the bass player”, recent Jeopardy!*1 contestant Erik Lang joins in on guitar, mandolin, and harmonica, as well as singing and writing a lot of The Superficials’ stuff. He’s also an avid gardener and amateur chef, recently creating dishes with peanuts grown in his own backyard.

It’s easy to coax a drummer into joining your band when your first gig together is at the legendary Seattle Hempfest*2, playing to thousands of serene stoners at around 4:20 in the afternoon. Since then, Matthew Togger, or “Togge”(pronounced: “tow-zhuh”) as referred to by his band mates, has been an indispensible part of The Superficial Sound. His percussion work can be heard on their new record, Play to the Clique, produced by multi-platinum*3, Grammy-nominated*4 Producer/Engineer Jim Lightman.

A veteran of all but one Bonnaroo, if Tripp Hewell isn’t making music somewhere, then he’s probably enjoying it elsewhere. Besides his penchant for festival-going, he’s also got a touring resume that would make many musicians jealous, including performances at the 12-Bar Club in London*5, and the original CBGB*6 in New York. An accomplished singer-songwriter in his own right, Tripp’s Beatle-esque guitar work and harmonies are prominently featured on Play to the Clique.

Do you know what it means to have a song “on hold” for someone? Paul Johnson certainly does. He’s got hundreds of ’em. A “writing machine” (as described by Sony*7 artist Jared Blake), Paul has written the lion’s share of Superficials material, in addition to published works for some well-known (and soon to be well-known) artists*8. Taking on guitar and vocal duties in the band, Paul has also released (and continues to release) many solo works of his own.

1Erik competed (and was summarily defeated) on Jeopardy! episode #6508, broadcast 1/5/11 *2The Superficials performed at Hempfest in Seattle WA, 8/17/08, Bone Thugs N’ Harmony headlined the show. *3Jim Lightman engineered the hit “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack, which has been certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA. *4Jim Lightman was nominated in the “Album of the Year” category for engineering “Acoustic Soul” by https://www.tradebit.come in 2002(the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack won the award).*5The Superficials performed at the 12-Bar Club in London, UK, on 12/4/00. *6Tripp’s band The Vox Pops (which also included Erik as a member) performed at CBGB in New York, NY 6/19/99, before the legendary venue shut its doors in 2005. *7From Sony Tree/ATV press release, 2/6/09. *8We’d like to tell you, but then we’d have to kill you.
