The seven core members of Substance W originally hail from Stockton, California and have been collaborating in various bands for over twenty years. Now dispersed along the West coast from Seattle to Los Angeles, members collaborate by exchanging tracks through the internet and then assemble final mixes using studios located in those two cities. Over the course of three albums, guest musicians have returned numerous times and are now de facto members as well, swelling the band''s ranks to over a dozen musicians. Inspired by a diverse range of influences -- from holiday songs, to ancient folk songs, to favorite pop and jazz standards, to the plot synopses printed on the backs of old VHS tapes -- the sound of Substance W is consistently unpredictable.
