NYC-based indie rock band, Get Help, are gearing up for the release of their sophomore record, The Good Green Earth in late Spring on Boston’s Midriff Records (a DIY label founded in 2002). The follow up to their 2008 debut release, The End Of The New Country, The Good Green Earth was produced by the band and Raymond Jeffrey, (who also engineered the record). The special collection of songs showcase a cohesive, organic sound that comes from the band’s songwriting duo, vocalist/guitarist Tony Skalicky and vocalist/guitarist Mike Ingenthron working closely together for several years.
Whereas the band’s last record was a sprawling compendium of mid-tempo guitar-pop, influenced by Yo La Tengo, REM, Built to Spill, the Rock*A*Teens and lots of other reverb heavy guitar rock, The Good Green Earth is a concise set of confident rock. From the relentless build of opener “The Opulence of a Clear Blue Sky,” to the contemplative, lushness of “Early Hours,” to the hook-laden, driving momentum of “You Should Be Home By Now”, the new disc is by turns solemn and exuberant.
Get Help started as a songwriting/music licensing project by Tony Skalicky (THE BEATINGS) and Mike Ingenthron (STRIKES AGAIN!, MICRODOT), two friends taking a break from touring and recording with their own bands. After several months of exchanging ideas over email, they found themselves not with the commercial jingles they had hoped for, but instead with a collection of lo-fi, rough around the edges, catchy-as-heck indie rock. They hosted their tracks on a blog they’d created to share random musical ideas, jokingly referring to themselves a “blog band”. But soon the songs took hold, and Get Help found they had a loyal following in NYC and Boston.
Encouraged by the response to their lark of a side-project, Ingenthron and Skalicky went into a Brooklyn studio and recorded their debut album, The End of the New Country. Upon its release, the response was positive. Get Help songs soon began appearing on ESPN, PBS Television, TNT and the National Geographic Channel.
Reflecting the evolution of Ingenthron and Skalicky’s collaboration, Get Help perform music that is energetic, emotional, and perhaps more than anything, honest. The Good Green Earth is an album by two friends who realize that writing all the songs they wished were on the radio is the correct way to make music — as caretakers and curators of the great bands of our lifetimes who have propelled music forward.
