Details:
Singer Libby McDowell cooks up a savory mix of traditional jazz, blues and bossa nova. The Libby McDowell Jazz Band whips in saxophone, flute, harmonica, piano, bass, drums and world percussion to present delectable renditions of standards.
Philadelphia native Libby Winchester McDowell studies English literature and music at Guildford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she was a jazz DJ for WQFS-FM. While in North Carolina, she began performing acoustic folk and blues in the Piedmont Triad, both as a solo performer and in the duo Woltz and Winchester. Libby broke in her jazz chops with Greensboro area jazz bands Mimosa and Salt and Pepper in the late 70s.
In the early 80s, Libby returned to the Philadelphia area, from where she toured as a solo folk/blues/jazz performer at clubs and college venues up and won the East Coast, including SUNY-Rochester, UNC-Greensboro, St. Mary’s College, and USC. Philadelphia public appearances include the North Star Bar and the Philly Live concert series in Kennedy Plaza.
Libby moved in 1985 to Delaware, where she earned a Masters Degree in Literature and Pedagogy from the University of Delaware. While working toward this goal, she was a guest performer with Crystal Creek, Pangaea, and Salt Peanuts as well as performing under her own name.
In 1994, she and husband saxophonist Mike McDowell formed the acoustic Tate Street Jazz Band, performing jazz standards and ballads. Increasingly drawn to Brazilian and other world rhythms, Libby and Mike formed the Libby McDowell Jazz Band in 1996. The band features a fluid mix of bossa nova, samba, ballads, jazz standards, and blues.
