FIDDLER MAGAZINE:
"Lisa Ornstein moved to Quιbec 20 years ago to study traditional Quιbιcois
fiddle. She was already an accomplished oldtime fiddler (listen to Ship
in the Clouds, on the Smithsonian label, which she recorded with Andy
Cahan). She had an important role in the resurgence of interest in
Quιbιcois traditional music, along the way earning an M.A. from Laval
University and the respect and admiration of traditional musicians
wherever she played.

And can she play! She has power, intonation, a bowing arm that crackles
with energy, yet conveys amazing nuances, a wonderful ear for phrasing and
rhythm, and a sharp musical wit. One of the many delights of Le Bruit
Court Dans La Ville is the way Lisa accompanies songs with her fiddle,
showing a deep understanding of the Quιbιcois vocal tradition, and an
inventiveness which never fails to thrill me. The arrangements of all the
songs on this album (seven of the eleven cuts have vocals) are evocative
and moving, often making use of bits of traditional melodies. She cuts
loose on three fiery Acadian dance tunes, two tunes from the great
Chicoutimi fiddler Louis “Pitou” Boudreault which feature his intricate
bowings and fantastic rhythmic complexities, and a rollicking tune written
by accordion legend Phillipe Bruneau as a homage to Mssr. Boudreault.
Since this is a fiddle magazine, I’ve focused on Lisa, but the strength of
this album lies in the collaboration between these three old musical
compatriots. Normand Miron on vocals, melodeon, 3row accordion and
harmonica, and Andrι Marchand on vocals, guitar, and foot percussion are
both from the Joliette area, a region famed for its traditional music.
They are both strong, passionate singers, and superb players. The
combination is amazing."

TRENTE SOUS ZERO:
"For some time now, many people have been hoping that fiddler Lisa Ornstein would come out with a CD. And here she is in great company. André Marchand needs no introduction. A singer and guitar player, André played with La Bottine Souriante for 15 years as well as with other groups such as the Marchand-Larsen duo, les Frès Labri (to name a few). On this CD, he is reunited with Lisa, a longstanding musical friend. The third member of this dynamic trio is Normand Miron, who plays accordion and harmonica and sings. We are immediately struck by the group''s exceptional quality and musicality. The repertoire is mainly traditional, interspersed with original tunes from André and Normand. Lisa''s fiddle playing also holds many surprises. Her harmonies on "Dans les prisons de Nantes" and "Dans Paris y''a une brune" are particularly moving. She has also pulled out of her treasure chest some exceptionally beautiful tunes "Le bruit court dans la ville"...our folk album of the year!"

DECIBELS MAGAZINE:
