Sophia is Prize, an electro-rock siren who is an opera singer in another life. After studying classical voice for 10 years, earning her Master of Music at San Francisco Conservatory and singing opera locally and abroad, she unleashes her solo project under the moniker Prize. The Split EP is a sharp mix of rock, electronic, and classical influences. She composes lush electro and string arrangements and in the next breath evokes the mosh pits of her youth with raucous guitars and drums. Whether traversing ethereal heights or unleashing an earthly growl, her voice is both technically sparkling and emotionally spirited throughout.
Sophia has paid her dues as a backup singer in San Francisco for the past three years, performing and recording with artists such as Third Eye Blind, John Vanderslice, Two Foot Yard, The Dodos, and Gabriel Leis at venues including Great American Music Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, Swedish American Hall, Palace of Fine Arts (Noise Pop 2010), and SFMOMA. She recently had a four-gig festival stint in her hometown Portland, OR as the lead singer of a retro-rock band, is a guest vocalist on electronica artist Ladder''s upcoming album, and frequently contributes her voice to Magik*Magik, Tiny Telephone studio''s house orchestra.
The first half of The Split EP was recorded by Ladder (Below Zero) and the second half by Ian Pellicci (Deerhoof, Rogue Wave, Hauschka) at John Vanderslice''s Tiny Telephone. The recording process further mirrors Sophia''s approach to Prize- she occupies the space between digital and analog, new and old, punk and art, light and dark.
