Details:
Belle Monroe and Her Brewglass Boys are one of Bay Area''s most beloved and heralded bluegrass bands. Regular hosts and performers at Amnesia''s infamous "Bluegrass Mondays", Belle Monroe and Brewglass have appeared at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, Strawberry Music Festival and just about every acoustic venue, dive bar and pickin'' party within a days drive (sometimes two) of San Francisco. Fronted by the "raw and sultry" (San Francisco Chronicle) British-born vocalist and guitarist Belle Monroe (Pam Brandon), the Brewglass Boys are made up Ted Silverman (mandolin), Jordan Klein (banjo), Diana Greenberg (fiddle), Will Fourt (dobro) and Tom Drohan (bass). While they have a great appreciation for traditional bluegrass music, Belle and her boys don''t quite play it straight. Their repertoire includes bluegrass originals and standards, plus versions of popular classics across all genres that are distinctively Brewglass in flavor: a bit of blues, a touch of Americana, a smidgen of swing, a hint of folk and a heap of positive and frenetic energy. If you like hard-driving bluegrass infused with infectious energy and heartfelt showmanship, then Belle Monroe and Her Brewglass Boys will be your perfect pint of brew!
Long Lonesome Day, Belle Monroe and Her Brewglass Boys'' follow-up to their 2007 self-titled debut, kicks off with the straight ahead bluegrass original "Square Peg In The Round". Written and sung by Belle, the song is about "being in the wrong relationship, the wrong job, the wrong town and one day waking up to the realization it''s time to go", she says. Up next is "Teardrops Turned to Snow" an original that has mandolinist Ted Silverman behind the pen and mic tracing the fate of a family during the Klondike Gold Rush. Other highlights on Long Lonesome Day include "I Feel the Blues Movin'' In", Belle Monroe and Brewglass'' version of bluegrass purist and living legend Del McCoury''s time-honored tale of heartbreak; "The Mighty Fallen Redwood", a folk protest song about protecting one of California''s most precious natural resources; "One After 909", a hard driving rockgrass cover of The Beatles gone freight-train blues and the tongue and cheek "The Big Light", originally written by Elvis Costello for morning after''s everywhere. The most beautiful and heartfelt song on the album is the title track, written by the late Rick Hendricks and performed by Brewglass Boy and banjoist Jordan Klein. Also featuring Kevin Johnson on trombone, "Long Lonesome Day" is about the passing of parents, time and the inheritance of an old farm. Hendricks was the dobro player for Belle Monroe and Her Brewglass boys for over a decade and passed away from brain cancer in 2009. Produced by the band and Ben Bernstein and recorded in Emeryville at Spliggityfidge Studios, Long Lonesome Day is dedicated to Hendricks'' memory.
