PORCELAIN

is the most refined of all ceramic wares. It is impervious, translucent, resonant and brittle. It is harder than steel, white as snow and it can resist higher temperatures than stone. We are used to plates and cups, kitch figurines and sinks being made from porcelain. We are less familiar with the work of modern sculptors drawn to porcelain due to its plasticity and aesthetic qualities.

Porcelain Music

is music played uniquely on porcelain. My name is Tobias Sturmer, I am the musician, composer and producer of this CD. My father Wather Sturmer is a well-known porcelain sculptor in Germany. His art objects were not originally designed to serve his musician son as interesting instruments. However, I have been able to extract a stunning variety of sound-scapes, colours and images from his artwork, by bowing, scraping, rattling, blowing, striking, plugging... and breaking porcelain.

This CD

contains 12 compositions, each one is a sound journey telling an intriguing story. They are left untitled in order not to restrict the listener''s imagination. To my knowledge Porzellan Musik is the first ever recording to document the wealth of sound qualities inherent in porcelain. Allow me to let the compositions speak for themselves.

Who I am.

I am a percussionist, drummer, composer, producer and ethnomusicologist living in London. Originally from Germany, I have worked, studied and lived in Senegal, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and New York. I did a Jazz degree at Mannes College, now part of the New School in NYC, where I also studied at the Manhattan Drummers Collective. I hold an MA in Ethnomusicology from SOAS, London University. I perform on the London Jazz, Latin-Jazz and African music scene. I run my own Jazz band Émigré and I am currently conducting various music recording projects in Africa. I also do a lot of experimental percussion work with choreographers and contemporary dancers.
