Sleigor Trout play a form of mutant power groove influenced by styles such as circus, funk, rap, ethnic and much more, all with an element of heaviness from stoner rock to death metal. The band has been together in Lismore, Australia since the beginning of 2003 and has been amazing audiences up and down the coast with their extravagant alter ego''s.
Sleigor began working on their debut album ‘Swimming Dementia’ towards the end of 2004 and released it to a record crowd in their home town on the 17th of March, 2005.
After a busy but successful year of constant performing on the east coast which included winning the regional finals for the ‘Jim Beam’ university band competition, Sleigor went to work on their follow up album. The second installment to the Sleigor Trout saga was released in March 2006 (now available here at CD Baby) and with a year’s growth behind the band, Sleigor have brought avant garde/circus metal to a new level!!

Easily one of the more interesting Australian metal acts is Lismore (N.S.W.) quartet Sleigor Trout. Formed in 2003, their line-up of vocalist Molluntorot, guitarist/keyboardist T, bassist Aarrgghh!! and drummer Tlux reads like they are a black metal band. Oh how wrong you would be if you had thought that! In fact, they are an avant-garde circus metal act that mix funk, rap, metal and disco amongst other things. After several line-up changes since their inception, they release their debut album Swimming Dementia in March 2005 and a little over a year on, they have returned with their sophomore effort, House Of Pain.
The eerie sounds of creeping footsteps stop when a door creaks open. This is the perfect intro to the title track, House Of Pain, which kicks of Sleigor Trouts second long player. The songs funky verses and heavy yet catchy choruses are indicative of the style of much of the album and instantly make me think of the likes of Mr. Bungle and Carnival In Coal. With the exception of the growled vocals during the chorus, Dancing Fear sounds like a complete throw back to fun and easy listening 80s pop synth music whilst the simple and catchy Dirty Divas shows a distinct Australian tone in Molluntorots vocals.
Continuing the bands circus like funky verses that are contrasted with heavier yet very listenable choruses are the swinging Wizardry Of A Failure, the carnival disco metal appeal of Funny Farm and the disco funk metal Picture For Alfredo in which Molluntorots vocals take on a Mike Patton vibe at times. Whilst Midget Master falls short of being as catchy and memorable as other tracks, Parkway Prison makes up for it as it stands out as one of the more dynamic tracks on offer before the haunting sounds of the spacey closer Epilogue round things out in perfect form.
Masks and disco, funk influenced metal certainly isnt new in the metal world. Mr. Bungle was doing this over a decade ago. In the wake of Bungles demise, theres been little in the way of this kind of metal since then. Sure the material on House Of Pain is simple but the thing is that its perfectly suited to what Sleigor Trout are doing. House Of Pain is an entertaining CD, and I can only imagine how much more entertaining these guys are live with fun music like this.
