MP3 Alan Subola - Powderhorn Park

The album is chock full of barn-burning original Rockabilly tunes, along with some honkytonk numbers, and then to throw a curveball in the mix, there are a couple of 60''s soul-sounding ballads. Alan is a strong guitarist and songwriter.

Here are a couple of reviews of the CD by Alan Subola:

More than a few local critics-including City Pages arts editor Dylan Hicks, who placed the album among his top five of 2004-found Alan Subola''s Powderhorn Park deliciously inebriating. The potent cocktail of raw-boned rockabilly, untrammeled honky tonk, and "60''s soul the Vibro Champs guitarist serves up on the disc is irresistible. Even more intoxicating are Subola''s live performances.

Alan Subola, most often heard as the featured soloist for the Vibro Champs, is a great guitar player – chopsy but not ostentatious, with a clean tone and improvisational know-how that can recall Buck Owen’s aide-de-camp Don Rich or country jazz ace Hank Garland.

His new solo album, Powderhorn Park, focuses on funny, sometimes off-color honky-tonk, but also confidently ventures into swing and ‘60s-soul territory. “Nobody’s Girl”, all pleasantly drippy lead work and Nick Lowe-like mellowness, is a swanky soul exploration. As a vocalist, Subola jumps around quite a bit, from over-the-top hillbilly affectations (as on “You Smell Like My Ex”) to a more naturalistic croon-with-bite (“When I Get You Home”). It’s backward looking music that doesn’t feel dead, and it’s sure to improve in a setting where beer and Bubble Up are sold.
