The jazz piano trio, TRI-FI, has released their third CD entitled "3." Since 2003, Matthew Fries (piano), Keith Hall (drums) and Phil Palombi (bass) have been developing an unmistakable trio sound that is contemporary, full of vibrant swing and deeply rooted in the tradition of the classic jazz piano trio. On "3," TRI-FI continues to explore some unique and accessible compositions that reveal why their musical chemistry has garnered rave reviews.
TRI-FI has spent the last seven years building a large fan base in the U.S., Germany, Denmark, Japan and the U.K. The trio invited these fans to help fund the new album through a relatively new project funding concept called Kickstarter (https://www.tradebit.com). Almost 150 different fans pledged support and were able to take advantage of the rewards offered as being part of the new project. "When we went into the studio, it felt incredible to know we had so many people behind us and that our recording was fully funded before we even played a note," Hall remarks.
The music on the album is wide-ranging in style and influence. "Take What You Want But Don''t Touch My Herring Shoes" (#2) is a bright and lively swinger written by pianist, Matthew Fries. During fundraising for the new album, British shoe company Herring Shoes joined in, generously supporting the project. This track is named in their honor and features dynamic solos by all three musicians. "The Long Journey Home" (#3) is a melodic waltz by Fries. Beautiful solos by Fries and Palombi lead into a Gospel-like climax that will have your hands clapping! The wild yet grooving "Repercussions" (#4) is another offering by Fries. This is a straight-eighth tune that conjures up sounds from Brazil, the Middle East, Cuba and Chick Corea! Featuring multiple drum solos by Hall, it is an excellent display of the communication and chemistry TRI-FI has spent years developing. "You & Me" (#5), co-written by drummer, Keith Hall, and his 10-year old daughter, Grace, is an easy-going, straight-eighth tune that has slight hints of reggae and Brazilian influences. The track opens with a thoughtful piano intro and leads into a singable melody with soulful bass and piano solos.
Hall says, "The sound quality on this new album is impeccable. We went to great lengths to insure that our fans would get the best sounding music possible. We recorded most of the music on analog as well and will be pressing LP records soon. At a time when most people are listening to compressed mp3s, there are still a lot of audiophiles who really appreciate our music too and we wanted to offer something to our more discriminating fans."
TRI-FI has been praised for “the perpetual forward thrust of the music... and their flawless intercommunication" by All About Jazz, and described as infusing “creative writing, fresh arranging and complimentary playing to offer us music that has to be reckoned with” by https://www.tradebit.com. Understandably, TRI-FI’s style has been compared to the music of the trios of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and modern piano trios of Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea – these are all major influences to the band.
Matthew Fries explains, "I think this record is a more mature side of TRI-FI as a band and the three of us as individual musicians. I''ve always felt at home playing with this group, but on this record I feel like the depth of the music is greater - not flashy or gimmicky in the slightest, but soulful and personal. I think we''ve become comfortable as artists and that has added to our individual voice on our instruments and as a band."
Pianist, Matthew Fries, was the winner of the Great American Piano Competition. Pianist and former Jazz Messenger, James Williams, called Fries “a bright young star in the galaxy of pianists who will lead us into the 21st century.” As a sideman, Matthew has been described as "the best jazz accompaniment I''ve seen in a cabaret in years" (The New York Times) and "a distinct asset" (Variety Magazine). He tours and performs regularly with singers Curtis Stigers and Stacey Kent and has performed with DeeDee Bridgewater, Vincent Herring, Claudio Roditi, Steve Wilson, Peter Bernstein, Charlie Persip, Walter Perkins, Billy Hart, Jay Leonhart and many others.
Drummer, Keith Hall, has performed with Betty Carter, Sir Roland Hanna, Wynton Marsalis, Steve Wilson, Michael Philip Mossman, Joe Wilder, Claudio Roditi, Mark Turner and tours regularly with Curtis Stigers. Modern Drummer Magazine says “Hall has a nimble, grooving, ''melodic'' touch, and knows how to tell a story.” Trumpeter and bandleader Michael Mossman calls Keith “a member of the new generation of hard swinging, versatile and musically aware musicians that will shape jazz for the next 20 - 30 years.” Hall is also the author of the drum instructional book Jazz Drums Now!
Grammy Award winning bassist, “Phil Palombi, is one of the most sought after young bass players in the New York City” according to tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf. Palombi is quickly moving through the ranks of the New York Jazz elite with a musical resume that includes performances with Michael Brecker, Billy Hart, Dave Liebman, Etta Jones, Chris Potter, Rich Perry, John Riley, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lew Tabackin, Chucho Valdes, Mark Turner, Eliot Zigmund, The Village Vanguard Orchestra and a two-year stint with the Maynard Feruson Big Bop Nouveau band. Phil Palombi recently published his first book entitled Scott LaFaro – 15 Solo Transcriptions; a book of all of Scott LaFaro''s bass solos from the Bill Evans recordings Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby.
