The release of the Plum Blossom CD is very special to me because the experience of making it has enriched my life considerably and I believe those who helped make it possible as well. Six years ago my wife of 29 years was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I was devastated and not sure how well I would cope with what lie ahead of us. One evening on a flight back from Philadelphia, I began to compose the first verse of a love song for my wife to reassure her that I would be by her side no matter what the future might bring. I was asked to play it at a support group for caregivers. The men in the group had tears in their eyes as I struggled to finish the song. I was asked to play it again at the National Cancer Survivorship Day Conference in RI that summer. The song produced a similar reaction from those in attendance. My good friend Peter offered encouragement and his recording studio to motivate me to write additional songs. Soon after, I wrote the Caregiver’s Song which acknowledges that caregivers need support too. Thus began our collaboration and a way for me to cope with what lie ahead. My wife meanwhile had taken up the art of beading and had joined a master beading program in Center Harbor, NH. Benefiting greatly from the art and the friendships that grew, the idea was born to do a beading workshop for women in treatment for cancer. The transformation of the women’s emotional outlook from that workshop gave birth to the establishment of Plum Blossom the inspiration for the Plum Blossom song. Enter Kevin Short who was a tremendous help in revising the lyrics and bringing them to life with a voice that resonates from the heart and soul. He assembled a group of musicians who have played with and are among the best in the business. But most importantly this CD is my gift to my wife and those who face each day with courage, and help inspire courage in others. Influenced by the folk artists of my generation, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, and Joan Baez, the songs each carry a message of support and love that gives hope to all of us. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of the CD goes to support cancer programs for women and their families.
