There is a mountain of VHS home movies of Katie Schaan making all kinds of music from the time she was a toddler. There was no doubt in anyone''s mind what that little girl was supposed to do with her life. When a tiny cello was put into Katie''s three year old arms, she never questioned it. In fact, it felt so natural she just assumed all kids her age were off to multiple music lessons a week. By the age of 13, she was so serious about both her voice and cello training, she had to pick one to focus on. Singing was, hands down, the winner in that competition. As an operatically trained vocalist, Katie has performed extensively in her home town of Victoria, BC, including with the Victoria Symphony conducted by Timothy Vernon.
During all of that classical training, Katie was unabashedly listening to pop music in all of her spare time. It wasn''t until she was studying opera at McGill University that she started to write her own songs. She broke free from her classical constraints in any way she possible could by singing everything from urban gospel to jazz, and writing her own pop tunes at the guitar and the piano. She sings with a voice that''s bigger than what you might expect upon first meeting her. Her songs are like letters and journal entries that give you a peek into her inner most thoughts. Whether or not she''s playing alone or with her band behind her, she commands the stage and takes you on a journey when she performs.
Katie has just released her debut album which was recorded in her hometown of Victoria, but she takes any chance at playing music she can get. When she’s not on tour or playing shows of her own, you’ll often find her with her cello or singing backups on stage or in the studio with other up and coming BC artists such as Steph MacPherson, Vince Vaccaro, Aidan Knight, and Cindy Davis.
