Details:
At age eleven I studied piano under the tutelage of Sister Rose while attending Catholic High School. After two years on piano, I became anxious at the lack of my progress, and I took up the guitar under the teaching of maestro Alejandro Flores. He was an elderly, grumpy man in his retirement. With him I learned the rudiments and chord structure in all musical keys.
A protégé of Flores was Gregorio Ruiz who had an all family band. When the World War broke out three of his sons were drafted into Military service. Gregorio asked me to join his group and play rhythm guitar. The music of that era, and which I learned, consisted of cuadrillas, valses, polcas, corridas and cunas, a whole range of music that was in vogue then. I fell in love with the valses, most of which were handed down from father to son, and so on. Later I participated in several musical groups, bands and trios. During the years I have tutored many persons, some of whom have had good success.
In this obra (project) all instrumentation is done by me, lead, rhythm, bass and drums. The selections acknowledge and give credits to the musicians with whom I played and learned from them. I also acknowledge Juan Ortega who has produced this CD.
