Aristotle takes a trip to Wal-Mart, with piano stylings after the fashion of Bruce Hornsby and Billy Joel, and smart-but-sincere lyrics of the sort that might come from a co-writing session with Randy Newman and Jimmy Buffett.

Details:
"Songs I Heard at the Fair" is Mike Esterheld''s debut album. From it''s contemplative opening track (inspired by a trip to the small Virginia town of Tom''s Brook) to its rollicking closing number (inspired by a trip to the local Super Wally World), the album is filled with stories drawn from many roads around the country and trips across the water. There are tales of love and loss, but also sly commentaries on Aristotelian metaphysics, and a song about a guy who can''t find any politically-correct way to express his feelings and so resorts instead to a bluesy scat solo. Sometimes life feels an awful lot like a crazy trip to the fair. These are some of the songs heard on the air.

Mike Esterheld has been writing songs for many years. He was born in Rochester, New York, and has also lived in Arizona, Maryland, Virginia, New Mexico, Montana, the District of Columbia, and Texas.

He left an early college career in theatre in order to work with the AmeriCorps, then went on for a Great Books degree at St. John’s College, which inspired him to write songs on themes of ethics and metaphysics (as well as love and loss, which no songwriter can hope to avoid, in life or in writing).

He got his degree, sang a few songs, then promptly disappeared, telling friends he was setting out to pursue a career as a soda jerk and filling station attendant in the woods of Montana. Other apocryphal accounts tell of his working as a bookstore clerk, a freelance photographer, and a substitute middle school teacher (closely linked with other obscure tales of his mental collapse, subsequent rehabilitation, and lingering abject terror at the sight of school-age children).

When he next surfaced, Mike was a sailor in the Merchant Marine, writing songs again and trying to see as much of the world as he could from the deck of a ship (he’s now able to confirm the reports that it’s mostly water out there). Somewhere along the way, he got a master’s degree in Eastern Classics (an upcoming album composed entirely in Classical Chinese should hit stores sooner or later), and figured out, with the help of some friends, that it was time to start recording some of his music.

His first album, Songs I Heard at the Fair, was released in the spring of 2007, and time will tell where the road leads next. Current rumors have him somewhere out on the Gulf of Mexico courting a mermaid, as well as rekindling his early career in Shakespearean tomfoolery. Suffice it to say that he keeps his ears open these days, both for good stories and tunes to set them to.
