Details:
A native from Caracas, Venezuela, Orlando Cela started playing flute at a very early age. He pursued flute studies at DePauw University under the tutelage of Anne Reynolds, as well as classical improvisation with Eric Edberg. He also studied in Vienna with Barbara Gisler-Haase, professor at the Hochschule for Musik und Darstellende Kunst, before moving to Boston, where he studied with Paula Robison at the New England Conservatory. At NEC, Orlando also earned a double masters degree in wind ensemble and choral conducting in one year, studying under Tamara Brooks and Frank Battisti. He also has performed in masterclasses with Raymond Guiot, Shigenori Kudo, Alain Marion and Trevor Wye in Quebec''s "Le Domain Forget" and the Teatro Teresa Carreño in Caracas, Venezuela, among other festivals.

Orlando created the Soria Chamber Players with which he performed, both as flutist and conductor, music from Bach to contemporary, including the Boston premier of Sciarrino’s opera “Lohengrin.” Orlando was a member of the Xanthos Ensemble and the Serenata Music Players, and recently performed as a guest artists with Music at Eden’s Edge. As a lover of contemporary music, Orlando usually collaborates with composers in order to stimulate the writing of new music for flute: such collaborations with composer Maxwell Dulaney led the later to earn an ASCAP Composition award for his piece Huayruro, and another collaboration between Willow Flute Ensemble and Peter McMurray became the recipient of the Barlow Commission.

Orlando was the conductor of the UMass Dartmouth Chorus and Chamber Chorus and assistant conductor of the Newton Symphony Orchestra; he has guest conducted the Marquette Symphony Orchestra, Northern Michigan University Orchestra, Brandeis New Music Ensemble and the Scituate Choral Society and is currently the music director of Willow Flute Ensemble (https://www.tradebit.com)

Orlando plays often with the Gardner Museum Chamber Orchestra, Music at Eden’s Edge and the Anemoi Quintet as well as with Annegret Klaua in a trio called “Las Paraulatas Bostonianas,” created to foment the performances of typical Venezuelan music.

As a teacher, he has taught at SUNY Fredonia, UMass Dartmouth, All Newton Music School, Carlisle Public Schools, Brookline Music School, has lead workshops at the Governor’s School of North Carolina, Escanaba Schools and Ishpeming Schools, and he is now faculty at College of the Holy Cross, as well as a Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and Yang Tai Chi instructor at WuDao Kung Fu and Tai Chi of Cambridge
