JAMES HEARST (1900-1983) was a farmer-poet who was born and raised on a farm in rural Cedar Falls. He taught creative writing at the University of Northern Iowa from 1941 to 1975, and published ten volumes of poetry during his lifetime. He remained connected throughout his life to a large network of poets and students, including Robert Frost and Carl Sandburg.
