One of rock''s best kept secrets has been Artie Kegler''s voice. The Ohio scene veteran of musical genres going back to psychedelia, Kegler often reinterpreted songs like Donovan''s ''Season Of The Witch'' to turn them into mysteriously sultry experiences. Nobody does the tough guy with the velvet tonsils as well as Artie, and the few original compositions that filtered through seemed not to exploit this side of his charm.

Finally we have a full CD of killer Kegler compositions, and it proves to be worth the wait.

Despite the perhaps fanciful title, Kegler is pretty serious in his songs, and runs the emotional gamut from the joys to the anquish of love, focusing big on trials of relationships, the difficulty of friends and family to, of course, heartache in abundance. Kegler''s even tempered flow stays intact no matter what trouble he''s gotten himself into. Kegler is lost without love, and makes no bones about it. But that doesn''t mean he isn''t a fighter. Nevermind if the production has a retro feel, it''s no more so than the Raconteurs or Steve Earle, and it retains the zipgun modernitity of the Yardbirds on the uptempo tracks.

On the very first track, ''Babylon'', Kegler lets us know just how high the stakes are. A rocker about spirituality, it''s much too personal to be catagorized in Christian rock. "Seems like I make so many mistakes, that friends just walk away," he sings, "Growing up has taken forever today."

The playful instrumental ''Circus Meditation'' breaks up the ballads to give this CD a Leon Russell circa ''Carny'' feeling. Like Russell, Kegler''s music is a hybrid of blues, country and psycheldelia wrapped around a unique persona. Guitarist Joel Guild plays very tasty tracks on ''Blue Birds Sing'', as does Larry Pester on ''Hotel Walls'' and ''A Question Of Time''.

Beautifully paced, Artie Kegler has one of the finest naturalistic singing you''re likely to hear this year, or ever. If you haven''t yet heard him you can thank me later.

RATING: 5 of 5. Excellent. Well worth the wait.
