In 2009 and 2010, the Red Line Sax Quartet won a historic six chamber music competitions in North America: Grand Prizes at the Chesapeake and Alice Coleman international chamber music competitions and 1st Prizes at Fischoff, Plowman, MTNA, and North American Saxophone Alliance Competitions. This CD contains their performances of the repertoire that led them to such stunning victories, and also represents their recording debut. The young, intrepid, and stylish chamber ensemble was also active in the concert hall, in outreach education, and in new music advocacy.
The music ranges from hard-driving, ultra-syncopated funk to meditative calm and sobriety, from the music of antiquity to that of the present day, from aggressive to seductive: it is a one-stop shop for a good cross-section of sax quartet repertoire. The selections on this album include three standard works in the sax quartet repertoire (Maslanka, Ticheli, Gotkovsky), one transcription (Byrd / O''Connor), and a humorous rag by one of the most influential saxophone composers of our generation (Matitia, or Christian Lauba). This is the first North American recording of David Maslanka''s Recitation Book.
