Sven Jacobs, singer/songwriter, spent his early twenties sailing the oceans, writing, and dreaming of better things. Originally from South Africa, Sven made a home on the west coast of Canada, where his laid back nature, developed through the people, inspired a way of being. His snowboarding culture added to his already calm way, as he says “everything in time.” Adolescent years were more about forming, learning, and ultimately growing in his passion for music. “Some nights were spent strumming a bit of guitar on the beach, some nights we played the clubs. There was still a lot of growing up to do.” His music has naturally always had a strong sense of rhythm and time, something others have attributed to his African blood, saying “you could only be from South Africa.” Once his music knowledge and theory were developed, Sven spent his time traveling, navigating ships across oceans, and backpacking through towns and cities. “Traveling had a very important role. It shapes a person. It brings out opinions on peoples interpretation of what culture means.”. At sea, he came to know first hand about true solitude, finding comfort in thoughts of vastness and natural inspiration. Much time was spent developing ideas, writing both poetry and music, and contemplation. Over the years he became more of an individual, finding his own very acoustic based sound. All he had with him at sea was his guitar, so he left all sounds of over production and complication to make way for simplicity. His sound has been said to be very groove based; a feel good summer mixture of both folk and pop. “There is always a story to tell. There will always be catchy phrases that need mentioning” He uses his music to express positive ideas and thoughts, always looking for the good in every moment. “It all goes back to attitude. Not every moment can be great, but though struggle comes character and inspiration. This is what music is based on”. Sven continues to write and perform, doing what he loves to do.
