Born in July, DACOSTA spent most of his childhood years traveling between Canada and Brazil until he settled in Canada’s National Capital Region at the age of 9. From a Canadian mother and a Brazilian father, he can fluently communicate in English, French and Portuguese. His music can be described as powerful, love-filled, sorrowful and heartfelt pop/rock.
DACOSTA began taking guitar lessons at the age of ten, at thirteen he started his first band and at sixteen years of age he began writing his own songs. He released his first full-length recording entitled “Mind Vacation” in 1994 followed by “Drop” in 1996 with the band The Flying Toads, in which he was the key band member writing both the music and lyrics.
After five years with The Flying Toads, DACOSTA left the band to pursue different musical interests and worked with various musicians producing and co-writing songs. He then decided to leave town. Equipped with nothing but a guitar and an old bag of clothes he began a new journey busking in the streets of the Old Capital, Quebec City.
DACOSTA returned to Ottawa and undertook the recording of “Speak to Me” in 2001 followed by “Miles Away” in 2003. In addition to this recording and supporting live performances, he undertook a new adventure when he felt the need to share his original French songs and subsequently released the full-length recording “Chez moi…”. DACOSTA participated in a province-wide contest and was one of the 10 finalists obtaining radio airplay and securing a publishing contract for the single “Chez moi…”.
In the Fall of 2009 DACOSTA felt the need to take time away from performing live, bringing his music-driven schedule and projects to a halt. This self-inflicted musical deprivation would soon be overturned when his path crossed once again with old time friend Allen Percival with whom he had collaborated in the past. Allen had written songs for which he felt DACOSTA could explore. Considering that DACOSTA had recently felt the need to take a break, he accepted on the condition that there were no expectations or timelines.
“Whether it be good or bad, I believe everything happens for a reason. We both have had our own individual struggles in the past couple of years and there must be a reason why our paths crossed again at this stage of our lives.” This new venture for DACOSTA rejuvinated the creative energy inside of him.
The new single that DACOSTA has been working on is “Take a Chance” which was written by Allen Percival. DACOSTA took this song and infused it with his musical skills and energy. As the author of several of DACOSTA’s songs, Allen often tells him that when he performs he sings from within and he perfectly expresses the emotion of each song. “Take a Chance” will be the new title track for this collaboration. Both are very excited about the project and look forward to sharing their work with all who will listen.
DACOSTA and Percival will hopefully spend a lot more time working with each other, creating thoughtful lyrics and powerful music.
