Details:
Although her debut album “Reaching for a Star” was released in 1992, Shawn Christopher has been dreaming big and aiming high throughout her career, which now spans four decades. She has toured with Chaka Khan and Kym Mazelle as a back up singer and appearing on various artists’ recordings such as Nick Tremulis, Gavin Christopher (her brother) and continued on and found success of her own with dance and gospel music.

Growing up on Chicago’s West Side, music was always a part of her life. Her first performances were singing with bands in her neighborhood. Music Conservatories encouraged her to sing Opera early on, but Christopher was drawn to the more soulful, raucous sound of Motown and the likes of Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, The Four Tops and Diana Ross.

From her earliest gigs in the ‘70s and ‘80s with Lovecraft and Panama, Shawn Christopher has always explored a variety of creative avenues. The ‘90s established Christopher as a musical force to be reckoned with, with a string of chart-topping hits including “Another Sleepless Night” and the eternal classic “Don’t Lose the Magic”. She has also recorded and toured extensively with funk band Sonia Dada since 1997.

While Christopher’s music has always been deeply rooted in Soul and R&B, her focus on Gospel music has been one of her most rewarding experiences thus far. Her Gospel album Drink form the Fountain was released in 2002. “I have learned so much in life that I want to share with people”, she says.

2005 found Christopher making her triumphant return to dance music with her “You Can Make It”, a collaboration with Ron Carroll being released on Soulfuric Records. Christopher is excited and energized by this latest venture, which allows her to bridge the different parts of her life so perfectly. The connection is particularly strong for her as a Christian: “House music is all about a feeling and groove, and I am able to take the word of God and put it in my message,” Christopher explains.
