Po''Baby
Born in the Windy City, this Chi Town native cut his teeth on the soulful streets
of Chicago''s Southside. "In Kuwait, 69th & Indiana where I grew up, life was
definitely caught up. Like many, I too became influenced by the game. You see
some of the older cats doing for their families and you don''t question the results
of the process. I lost a lot of friends and family to the streets as a kid. I hurt''s me to think about it. My writing helps me to deal with it the only way that I can...on the mic."
Borne in 1977 to a military family, Pobaby''s life was constantly on the move. "My pop was being shipped all over the place when I was a kid." Living over seas in Germany for a couple of years, in southern Georgia for a spell, on the east coast in New Jersey, as well as Texas before finally returning home to Chicago, Pobaby''s exposure to the world and the importance of family unity helped to shape his views on life, as well as the lyrics and songs that he would eventually write.
Finally back home, the 90''s in Chicago brought about many changes in Pobabys life. "Music had always been an important part in my parents life. They were constantly playing music, everything but country. On the streets Hip Hop had takin over. On every block all you''d see was street evolution and dudes rhyming day and night. That''s where it all started for me."
When asked about his influences, " I was really into KRS One, Biggie and 2-Pac at the time. I''d listen to their style and what they were sayin, and just get inspired to write. There were a lot of cats rappin all over Chicago. Every corner, every park, you name it, kids would battle rap for street creds. I used to hit the legendary Buckingham Fountains rhyme battles. That''s where you''d test your skills, and learn your craft. Those sessions were monster. You learn so much about yourself when you''re tossed into the fire like that. No mercy givin there. If you were wack, you might as well not show up." Pobaby also credits his influences to all the various Chi-Town artists that were popin in the 90''s, as well as current artists: Eminem, Ludacris, Mob Deep, The Wu, Busta Rymes, Slick Rick, the Native Tongue Family, Slum Village, U.T.F.O., Def Jam, Rap-A-Lot, The Dungeon Family, Mug & 8 Ball and the whole Philly Neo Soul Movement.
1994 brought about the formation of the Rap group ILL Behavior. Working with famed Chicago Urban and Hip Hop producer NO I.D., Pobaby and the group got their first real exposure to recording and production while working on their self-titled CD "I''LL Behavior". "At the time NO I.D. was, and still is, the man in Chicago. He was working with us, Common Sense, Kanye West, and a bunch of the up and coming young cats. We were more than happy to have his interest. We had the opportunity to open for Common at the 94'' Saviors Day Rally in Chicago. That was an incredible moment for me."
Riding of the success of the Savior''s Day Rally, Pobaby was back to the grind of daily survival and the reality of the streets. " After tasting the energy of success and the desire that it brings, you start to look at the block in a different light. I loved my city and the people, but folks just seem to get stuck. Deep down I knew that I wanted something more and if I stayed in the game I''d get stuck as well."
Joining the military offered Pobaby a change of scenery and exposure to the world and its people that the block couldn''t provide. " It was the one way out at the time, my options were fairly limited and I needed to make a move."
And move he did. With tours of duty in Japan, Australia, Middle East countries Bahrain and Kuwait, as well as Hong Kong, Thailand and Canada, Pobaby''s world blew wide open. "I''d been writing and battle rapping guys during my entire tour. It was amazing to see how powerful and far reaching Hip Hop had become in the states and all over the world. "Japan absolutely blew me away. Them kids would be dressin like us and rhyming in English and didn''t even know what they was sayin. It was amazing. They all wanted to be like us, when we didn''t even want to be like us. How powerful is that?"
Arriving on the West Coast in 97'' Pobaby landed on his feet running. "New beginnings bring new challenges. It''s exciting. I''m used to it growing up movin all the time. It''s just a matter of hittin the street, and finding out what''s going on. I spent a lot of the time maturing as an artist and thinking about how my life story through lyrics might influence people to think."
As a founding member of The Horde, Pobaby''s energy and mic skills help the groups 2000'' self titled independent release "The Horde", land radio air play at Ventura County''s #1 Hip Hop and Urban station Q104.7 with the hit single "La Ocho Cero Cinco". " The (805) is a very diverse area. Latin, Black, White, you name it, its here. I figured it would be a cool way of giving props to our community. I really didn''t think that it would go over as well as it did."
Riding the groups success of "La Ocho Cero Cinco", performing at sold out shows in and around So Cal. provided Pobaby the opportunity to open for Jayo Felony and Domino, perform with PKP artist Natese live at Nicholby''s, perform and record with (805) favorites "The Bonafied Heavy Weights", as well as appearing as a featured artist on the "PKP Presents" compilation CD released independently in 2001''. " You just hang in there and keep swingin, and good things eventually happen. You just have to believe in yourself and stay positive"
And good things are indeed on the horizon for this charismatic and talented artist. In 2003 Pobaby was introduced to independent L.A. producers Big Mike and https://www.tradebit.com. " My boy Doc Slim had been working with them a bit and said that they were hot and brought me through. After meeting them, listening to material and feeling the vibe, I knew that these guys could take me to the next level." At present Pobaby''s debut solo album "Pobaby, Act Like You Know Me", to be released on the 3 Deep Records label, is near completion and headed for a summer 2004 release.
When asked to define his artistic goals and style, " I just want to enlighten the world with the blue collar, average Joe, working class man''s issues. Real life experiences seem to be a missing element in today''s Hip Hop. The Hip Hop scene has been reduced to a cast of Pimp''s, Players, Hustlers, and Gangstas. We all have a little bit of those types of characters in each of us, some more than others. But the real question is, who''s going to represent the proud working man, his life, and his issues?
