Jonah Picoxo, a self declared casual gypsy of Northern California, has the tendency to pick up an instrument, crawl inside of it, and pull out some of the catchiest, most memorable melodies. He shows off this ability on Bourne into Dreams, his solo debut. Melding together catchy acoustic guitar lines that drive quirk pop bass hooks, all in front of the undulating rhythm of his drums; it’s kind of like the Pixies unplugged, with a prozacked Kurt Cobain singing Elliott Smith lyrics.
Recorded in various locations, such as the projection booth of a movie theatre, a turn of the century farm house, a welding shop, and a cabin on a small island, Bourne Into Dreams is a brash yet poignant album that captivates the mind with its stark reality paired with hopeful optimism. “I had this idea to make an album people would like because it was good...simply that and nothing more.” Picoxo states.
No stranger to the music world, Picoxo started Ashtray Records while still 16 to help release a friends record. Before graduating high school, he had recorded demos for many bands and released 3 records, including a compilation disc that featured such Vacaville alumni as Jassen Jensen of Die Trying in his former band Everelse, and Papa Roach. “It was a lot of fun putting out those records, but eventually I decided I wanted my turn.” he reflects.
And here his turn is; a catchy album from an ambitious man. Future plans include touring and recording sessions for his next record, which promises to be just as exciting. “I now have musicians volunteering to work with me for the next record after hearing what I‘ve done so far.” Quite the buzz...
