MP3 Phideaux - Chupacabras

Artful progressive rock with a slight post punk tinge. A beautiful and complex album not for the feint of heart.

8 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Progressive Rock, ROCK: Psychedelic

Details:
Phideaux is a project between drummer Rich Hutchins and singer Phideaux Xavier. Utilizing the engineering wizardry of Gabriel Moffat, they create a complex, humourous, pretentious type of overly artsy progressive psychedelic rock music.

With a SLIGHT post punk attitude, they have unleashed an epic with their new album Chupacabras. With cellos, flutes, dobros and a host of nasty electric guitars and several singers, this spree is polyphonic and polytheistic.

It''s our party -- stay forever -- say you will!

"With some great performances from all the musicians involved, tasty arrangements and high quality writing, Chupacabras is far more than a collection of oddities and previously unreleased pieces flung together from "excavations of the Bloodfish boneyard". The album hangs together very well providing a cohesive and coherent fifty minutes of entertainment. Add to that a superbly presented 20-page booklet and a very reasonable price, what you get is a class album.
Conclusion: 8 out of 10"

"Chupacabras is the type of album that makes me still enjoy listening to Prog Rock today. It''s the type of album that needs to be heard by the widest audience possible. Highly recommended."

"If you enjoyed his previous albums this is a must have. If you’re a fan of Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, Pink Floyd, Bowie or similar then you owe it to yourself to add Chupacabras to your collection immediately!"

"...this is a fun collection of songs that would appeal to a wide variety of listeners, as it has enough elements of prog, space/ambient, pop, and heavy rock to fit many molds."

"Phideaux wrote to meabout a totally over the top prog-rock epic called "Chupacabras" about the life of the so called "puerto rican goat sucker" creature. Clocking in at over 20 minutes, the piece would dominate any album, and so it appears on this semi-official release. Chupacabras begins with the deliberation of a Peter Hammill epic and then a load of new elements get thrown in: female vocals, melodic guitar solos, changes in rhythm, bubbly synth, steel guitar, flute. Each element is introduced with care and fits in naturally. There''s a lightness of touch even when Phideaux is at his most Prog and you always welcome his expressive voice. Now, I grew up in the 70s and I''ve listened to a good many 20 minute songs but Chupacabras beats what I can remember by a mile because it doesn''t become tired at any point.
The other tracks are good too, but a bit overshadowed by the epic. The last track Titan is about when I came out of my trance and it wrapped everything up very nicely. So, a 70s prog epic? Not really, this isn''t a retreading of old footprints but a true maverick making something new yet familiar. "

"Here we have a high quality Progressive Rockband from the USA. They sent me 3 CDs, all of which are quite impressive, but especially their 2005 release ‘Chupacabras’ is a very sensational record that would do very well in the European Progressive Rock community as this offers perfectly produced prog in the style of FLOWER KINGS, IQ, RUSH and you name it. I am quite sure when the prog fans discover this gem they will fall in love instantly with the band. Their first record ‘Ghost story’ from 2004 offered a bit more modern and radiofriendly songs, but just like their 2005 record, also the new CD ‘313’ goes into a very progressive rock area with lots of instrumental passages. Nevertheless, the real winner of the 3 PHIDEAUX albums is their 2nd 2005 record ‘Chupacabras’ with the titletrack being a 20 minutes counting epic prog rock monster! Recommended to all prog fans out there.
