The American folk tradition is a blend of many styles, people, cultures and ideas. This is the background of this album. It mixes Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Leo Kottke, Mississippi John Hurt and dozens of other artists I''ve listened to and admired, and interprets them through my piano, guitar, voice, my ideas. Some of the songs are new, and some are from years ago, when I was into some different side road of the American folk tradition than the one I''m on now. Some of the album is political, some romantic, some just for fun. The instrumentation is simple and natural. There is no head shattering fake drums, though in later CD''s that will change. This CD is a creature of its time. It''s a mix of what I do now and what I did before, but I''m not saying there won''t be a lot of changes in songs to come. I like the variety, and there are lots of roads to play on. All the music is mine, written by me, played by me, and it all reflects what I think, what I want to hear, what I want others to hear. It''s an age of artificial music, and there''s nothing wrong with that. I just wanted to make one that I thought was real.
