Jah Roots, a retrospective of select songs originally released when Heinrichs was the front man for his former band of the same name. Each track has been revisited with a stripped down, acoustic sensibility that serves to reinterpret fan favorites in a way that renders each song an entirely new experience. The band Jah Roots was founded in 2002 by Josh Heinrichs and four childhood friends. Each member of the five-piece grew up together in Springfield, Missouri and honed their skills in various bands around town before joining up to form Jah Roots. The band went on to release five studio albums and toured much of the United States. The success they garnered became evident by the large indie following they earned simply through word-of-mouth, tireless touring, and successful online sales of their music. Their success was an impressive feat considering they were pioneering a reggae scene in the American Midwest, a part of the world where reggae had not traditionally flourished.
The entire twelve track album Jah Roots is being released as a sincere “Thank You,” to all of Heinrichs’ fans that have followed his work since his Jah Roots days. In order to show his appreciation, originally the album was going to be released free of charge but that proved impossible. “You know, i-Tunes won’t allow an album to be put out for free, so I figure $1.99 is pretty close,” Heinrichs said. In addition to Jah Roots being released out of a sense of appreciation, it was also conceived as a means to satisfy the thousands of fans online, around the world, who enjoy the acoustic work Heinrichs regularly posts. “So many people seem to like the acoustic work I’ve posted online, that I felt the time was also right to release this album,” said Heinrichs. Heinrichs was joined in the studio while recording Jah Roots by musicians Mick Kline and Bill Bruce, and fittingly the recording was done in Josh’s hometown of Springfield.
Each track is a fully realized, original meditation on the music that came before. Both long time Jah Roots fans, and first time listeners, will discover something surprising and new to enjoy on this latest offering.
