''There is more indie out there than you can shake a stick at. Here’s something you can shake your hips to’ declare London four piece Young and the Damned - putting in to plain sight, in their own inimitable way, an ambition to eschew the self-absorbed shoe gazing which plagues so many of their contemporaries. Their plan, replace it with something altogether more playful, swaggering and dare we say it, danceable. The bands coquettish flirtation with Latin flavours and upbeat rhythms is not entirely surprising for a group named after Luis Bunuel’s Mexican cinematic masterpiece - but there is much more on show here than simple South American pomp. “We just want to mix it up, throw in some influences from leftfield and surprise a few people. It’s about having fun, stirring some sounds around and seeing what comes out!’
Having met in their teens through a mutual love of intelligent, angular pop Young and the Damned have forged a sound which is uniquely compelling and blessed with a fecundity of ideas that would turn your average skinny jeans quartet green with envy. They straddle the boundary between musical introspection and fire in the belly rock n roll with an almost reckless aplomb. This is a band consistently challenging the expectations of those who would like to see them pigeonholed and boxed in.
Above and beyond anything else, there is a backbone of timeless song-writing which runs through the core of everything Young and the Damned do. Jacob Brookman’s insistent piano is a timely reminder of pop classics from days gone by while Toby Dennett’s 12 string guitar lines spiral and twine into decadent, Marr-ish flourishes of brilliance. Combine this with Chaz Tomlinson’s ‘maximalist’ drumming style and Patrick Carr’s rich, distinctive vocal delivery and penchant for timeless lyrical narrative and you are left with a band capable of moving an audience in every possible sense. The group’s personable offstage charm vividly reflected in their charismatic musical output.
Young and the Damned are now preparing to launch their debut e.p and give everyone a flavour of exactly what they are about. Tracks like ‘What Goes Up’ are possessed of an emotional erudition which few bands on the scene can hope to equal, painting a picture of youthful desperation against the backdrop of the big, faceless city. Elsewhere, ‘Rita’ matches the bombastic blast of Salsoul and Merengue with lovestruck indie in a relentlessly catchy package demonstrative of a band who are not afraid to push genre boundaries in every direction.
In an era where music is running low on content, high on hyperbole and hollow style, Young and the Damned provide a welcome respite and a chance to enjoy music with a heartfelt passion and abiding craft.
