Jeanne Mackey: Music has been a beloved companion throughout my life—from benefit concerts and picket lines to earth holydays, births, deaths, joinings, partings, & other rites of passage. Always plenty of songs to sing, but I couldn''t seem to write my own-- until now. It took this many years of living for the inner chorus of doubt to quiet down a bit. These songs help me embrace it all--big dreams and popped balloons, belly flops and belly laughs, moments of magic and grace.
The show''s title comes from 14th century Persian mystic Hafiz. According to legend, Hafiz was asked, "What is the sign of someone who knows God? He replied, "Dear, they have dropped the knife. Jeanne Mackey began her musical career in Washington, D.C. as part of the women’s music and social justice movements of the 1970s. Throughout the 1980s, Mackey performed with Lifeline, a four-woman rock band that played at conferences, demonstrations, women''s music festivals, and labor union events in the D.C. area and nationwide. Since moving to Ann Arbor, MI in 1995, she has directed the multi-ethnic choral group Sacred Song, co-founded a women''s singing circle (Women with Wings-West), and produced a benefit performance of Howard Zinn''s "Voices of People''s History of the United States."
