Details:

Susan Lovell has been writing her music with guitar and piano for many years, singing songs of nature, relationships, children’s magical worlds, as well as observations and recollections of the human condition. Her debut album, Topanga Anthem, is a collection of songs reflecting the natural beauty and gentle nature of a mountain village near Los Angeles, with its very unique social environment of concern for nature, kindness to others, and a culture of concern for mutual safety and security. Topanga Canyon, amidst the Santa Monica mountains has weathered storms and fires, with its inhabitants working closely with each other for protection and survival. The songs in this album speak to the wildlife and forested beauty of Southern California mountains, as well as to the ‘“people of the Canyon”, the turning of the seasons, or the simple joy of kicking off ones shoes and enjoying “summer feet”! One special song describe an exchange with a family from Louisiana, the subject for a Discovery Channel special, “Red & Blue”, while a second song reminds us of some of the experience of day workers and the community in “Men of Topanga”. The accompaniment of acoustic instruments, both classical and folk/country with a little Cajun “bluegrass”, brings a varied and musically interesting background for the vocal treatments. The cello and flute are lush and soaring, and the banjo, fiddle and guitar bring their playful and unique rhythms to the songs they accompany. Brushes and bass complete a steady rhythmic backdrop for the other instrumentation. All of the musicians are native Topangans, with the exception of two--second banjo and fiddle--from Brighton, England. This is an album which creates a mellow and restful mood, while speaking to the things we all cherish: nature, peaceful relationships, and the simple joys of life.
