Details:
To hear the original Del Satins reunited here on CD is to hear what Dion must have heard that afternoon in 1961 when he auditioned the group to launch his tougher, grittier recording persona after leaving The Belmonts. He stopped them after hearing less than half of their audition song (“Beside My Love”), the legend goes. He knew he had found the sound and the soul of the streets of New York in these young men when he recruited them to add their vocal prowess to “Runaround Sue”, “The Wanderer”, “Donna the Prima Donna”, “Love Came to Me”, “Lovers Who Wander”, “Ruby Baby” and an enviable lot more that would go on to sell millions upon millions of records.
However, The Del Satins were a force to be reckoned with in their own right even before they teamed up with Dion for the aforementioned string of hits. Formed in the Yorkville section of Manhattan in 1957, the group recorded for a number of record labels, racking up respectable sales and garnering the admiration of many of their contemporaries along the way. And it seems The Del Satins have a legacy of the kind of magnetism that drew Dion to the group. Radio and TV personalities such as Alan Fredericks, Bob Lewis, Murray the K and Jerry Blavat would go on to take a special interest in The Del Satins, often including the group in their special events, from a Broadway revue to the 1964 World’s Fair. Clay Cole made the group a permanent and integral part of his weekly TV shows. Johnny Maestro would ultimately leave the Crests to join The Del Satins, the combination of which would become the vocal core of The Brooklyn Bridge.
Those who have seen the group live will be quick to note that The Del Satins are unparalleled in their stage presence. Determined to not be just another “street corner” vocal group, they often spent 12 hours a day rehearsing their songs and perfecting their live routines. They incorporated comedic skits, remembered fondly today by their fans who reminisce about their “slow-motion baseball”, “Officer Krupke”, “light bulb out of the nose” and “bug” antics.
The fact that they thrived through the British Invasion, performing alongside UK rockers and Motown luminaries, is a testament to their unquestionable talent and staying power. Although the group splintered in 1966, Freddy Ferrara and Les Cauchi would continue on with the Brooklyn Bridge through this printing and Tommy Ferrara would later resurface with The Capris, his signature bass-line punctuating the group’s 1982 neo-doo-wop smash “Morse Code of Love.” Stan Zizka would join blue-eyed soul powerhouse The Magnificent Men before forming his own combo, Tangerine, with which he continues to perform to this day. Occasionally, the four surviving members reunite for much-anticipated and well-attended concerts, often drawing life-long fans from all over the country.
As for this, The Del Satins’ first LP, classics like “Teardrops Follow Me”, “I’ll Pray for You” and “Does My Love Stand a Chance” are all re-created here with a sense of reverence for the originals. A prolific songwriter as well as a formidable lead singer, Stan Zizka serves up five of his finest originals for you here to round out the collection. From the heartbreak and the yearning of “Try Again” to the ultimate kiss-off song, “Here’s to You (My Love)”, you’ll find your own favorites after a spin or two.
Many enthusiasts of the group believe their immeasurable energy was never captured by any of The Del Satins’ early recordings. With Stan, Charlie Aiello and Johnny Maestro at the helm of this project, it’s no wonder that the group feels this is their finest effort to date.
