Oregon based hard rock band Unfound Substance say that their debut L.P., Truth in Lies, should appeal to both rock and metal fans alike. Released in 2006, this five track L.P. delivers a sonic assault from its opening song.
“Worthless” proves to be a very worthy intro chock-full of dynamic buildup, down tuned guitars and various melodic overtones. Its catchy vocal pattern sports an
anthem-like feel with plenty of anger and emotion. Its chorus hook is sure to stay stuck in the heads of listeners after only a couple of plays.
The L.P. title track “Truth in Lies” begins with more heavy and melodic riffing followed by a moody verse that blends clean guitar with a softly distorted single note lead. Various delay effects on the vocals create an almost eerie feeling which assists in delivering the lyrical message. An intricate melodic guitar rift fueled by a crystal clean tone makeup the song’s outro.
The disk’s third track “Censorship” creates a marriage of beauty and aggression. With its clean opening rift and slightly distorted pre-chords buildup “Censorship” takes listeners through various dynamic elements and is again driven by catchy and brutally honest lyrics. Creative bass lines and consistently solid drumming are other attributes in the Unfound Substance song writing formula. From song to song the listener is sure to be enticed by cool bass runs and impressive drum fills.
In the forth track position comes “Take Control” a song that quickly replaces melody with anarchy. “Take Control” abandons the real “song-song” approach taken in the first three songs and brings forth a structure of mayhem that cries Nu-Metal all the way. With singing, screaming and lots of low end heaviness “Take Control” does its job well by taking the listener through a math metal frenzy before coming to a head bobbing ending that leaves the listener with just enough time to take a breath before the final track.
“Silence” rips forward in the L.P.’s fifth and final position delivering diverse guitar riffs and emotional vocal and instrumental buildups that feel right at home in this outro track. The last sixty seconds of “Silence” combines just enough energy, intensity and fury to end the L.P. in killer rock star fashion and have it’s listeners heading right back to track one to hear it all again. The intensely dramatic mood of “Silence” caps off an excellent debut from Unfound Substance.
With no current record deal as of yet Unfound Substance is surly a band to keep an eye on in the future.
