Orris was born out of a genuine desire to create something truly unique and nakedly honest. David Orris has fused his soundscapes and songs with the skills of a variety of kindred musicians including inventive guitarist Michael Olsen who has leant his sonic prowess to the project. In this spirit of authenticiy and exploration, David crafted what would ultimately result in a whole new sound comparable to Coldplay and U2 meet Bright Eyes and Sigur Ros. Building textural soundscapes centered around piano and voice, David conjured the sound Music Connection Magazine predicts will win fans among anyone looking for music with a soul.
Raised in Twin Peaks and Chicago, David is the son of an ordained minister. By the age of four, he was singing and playing piano competitively and in his teen years went on to win a vocal scholarship to the Wheaton Conservatory where he studied voice, piano and composition. During his studies, David ventured outside the traditional curriculum and delved into experimental exploration of sound, as well as a long-suppressed attraction to Eastern forms of meditation and spirituality.
Orris'' spiritual and creative intentions have resulted in music reviewers say "makes you believe youre experiencing something big," is "intriguing and wholly unique" and in the end, seeks to give listeners "looking for music with a soul" something authentic.
***Orris has recently joined forces with the ROYALTIES GROUP and pledged 10% of ALL profits from "The Seraphim Circus, Volume I" to support The Jeff Griffith Youth Center which assists kids trapped in homelessness and prostitution find safety, education and healing.
Musical Cohorts...
Michael Olsen grew up in a small town near Seattle, deeply influenced by the local grunge scene. When he began locking himself in his room at an early age, practicing and transcribing records up to eight hours a day, an incredible mixture of technical ability and raw guitar sound emerged. He experimented with styles ranging from Reggae to Progressive rock, becoming an incredibly versatile musician with a solid ear and a tendency toward improvisation. All of this culminated in Michael applying to the renowned Musicians Institute where he went on to earn his degree and continue his evolution as a musician.
About the Name...
More than an eponymously named project (ironically, the name given David by his conservative religious lineage), Orris is a magical root and a Moon plant.
