Taking the stage at a jazz club recently Joanna was introduced as “there are flute players and there are flute players, but there is only one Joanna Sullivan”. It can be safe to say there is no other flute player in Australia quite like Joanna Sullivan. In the course of a 20 year career Joanna has developed a sound that is her own. On the evidence of ''At The End of The Day", recorded with Airstream and renowned Jazz guitarist and composer Andrew Hobler, it may have been a long wait.
I studied flute at the Victorian College of the Arts, with Vernon Hill the principle flute of the Melbourne Symphony and the legendary composer and conductor Thomas Pinschof. Later with Paul Curtis, former principle flute of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Michael Cox of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. I have attended many workshops with the likes of Paul Edmund-Davies, principle flute of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Having played in several orchestras in Australia, toured nationally with the Pirates of Penzance with Jon English. (recently shown on Ovation channel on TV) Played on the same bill as the great Australian Jazz trumpeter, James Morrison, The Ten Tenors and Kate Cebrano.
In my spare time, usually Sunday afternoons, I managed to raise 5 beautiful children. Two of my girls have played violin and viola in the Australian Youth Orchestra. I am now a freelance flautist, music consultant and play regularly with Jazz guitarist Andrew Hobler in ''Airstream'' a duo that crosses Jazz, classical and folk with a smattering of original tunes that my partner likes to call ''soft prog'' although I''m not convinced and prefer to think of it as Pat Metheny influenced
The experience of working with and alongside such a variety of musicians has led to the ability to cross over many musical styles in many combinations of instruments.
My influences are varied and many as I stick to the notion that there are two types of music, good and bad. The musicians that inspires me most are jazz guitarist Pat Metheny and https://www.tradebit.comh. I also listen to Lindisfarne - Pink Floyd - Tommy Emmanuel - The Beatles - Bill Evans - Eva Cassidy - Chick Corea - Herbie Hancock - Diana Krall - Miles Davis - James Morrison and more..
