High Horse is Brent Floren''s 2004 follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut CD, Fortune. High Horse combines the power of quiet story telling with the varied rhythmic hooks of spaghetti western, blues, jazz and R & B. Floren''s songs examine the always compelling, sometimes disturbing, and sometimes mundane lives of people-from a road weary little boy to a woman deciding to finally leave her husband to an old man waiting to die. Floren and his band mates recorded the 13 original songs of High Horse in their rehearsal studio. The CD was mixed and mastered by Hans Buff, whose recording credits include, Prince, Son Volt and American Music Club, to name a few. Buff helped Floren in capturing a sound that is at once rootsy and raw yet undeniably contemporary.
"There are dozens of bluesy folk singers on the acoustic circuit, but Floren is a special songwriter whose work-which wouldn''t be out of place in a box of Joe Henry/Bruce Springsteen/Tom Waits outtakes-deserves a wider audience."
-Jim Walsh, PIONEER PRESS
Floren released his first CD, Fortune, in 2000 while living in Eugene, Oregon. At that time he was performing solo and playing up and down the I-5 corridor on the West Coast. Floren played the main stage at the Willamette Folkfest and opened for Tom Rush. Upon returning home to the Twin Cities Floren met his current band members, drummer/percussionist Tom Duda, and upright bassist Todd Doty. A distinctive sound and chemistry developed as they began to regularly play at The Bryant Lake Bowl as well as The Fine Line, where they recently opened for national singer-songwriter, Vienna Teng. Floren and his mates have that "thing" you look for in a band-talented musicianship coupled with an ability to take surprising risks.
