The "Big C" Project was created by Jon Henderson. He''s the guitarist and vocalist in the band called "SPYZ." BIG C refers to cancer and Jon will become an 8 year survivor of the disease in July of 2007. "When I was diagnosed in July 99 with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer the statistics said someone with this diagnosis has an average life expectancy of 9 months and the chances of surviving 5 years was less than 5%" says Jon. "My best friend Dieter reminded me I was a person and not a statistic...my brother David became my pep talikng coach and the fight began. Jon has undergone 5 major surgeries, radiation therapy and a variety of chemotherapy cocktails. This past summer he had double lung surgery and a serious complication when ARDS (Adult Respitory Distress Syndrome) which left him near death and in a coma for 45 days. "It has been quite a rollercoaser ride in living with cancer and all the baggage that goes with it and that''s what "BIG C" is all about."
The "BIG C Project" is a CD collection of 16 songs that relate different stories, emotions and frustrations about living with Cancer. Like any other songwriter, you tend to write about things going on in your life and around you and that''s what Jon did with the help of his bandmates Dan Dulco, John Pentland and Dave Watson.
SPYZ was formed in 1984 and was part of the "Alternative" music scene in Los Ageles through the rest of the 80''s. Like other bands of that generation, their sound didn''t fit in a box which gained the interest of from people working with TOTO. A management deal with John Dembo and Stan Blye was struck and the band was shopped. They brought Steve Pocaro into the project to produce the first record. Deals at Capitol Records and Polydor/Polygram were on the table. The management team fell apart and the band was back to square one and decided to call it quits in 1990 to pursue other careers. The band members always stayed in touch and jammed from time to time in the 90''s and beyond. A full reunion took place in 1994 and a record was recorded. It''s in the process of being remixed and will be offered soon to the general public along with Then Complex Sessions CD
Jon Henderson was diagnosed with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer in July 1999. In 2002 Jon began working on a new project called "Big C" and called his old bandmates to collaborate and perform on the CD and appear in a documentary DVD about living with cancer using the music as the soundtrack. Recording commenced in March 2004 and finally "BIG C" is complete and available to the pubic. The songs present the story and experience of living with cancer...if you know someone battling the disease, please make them aware of this...it might just help!
