Providing a show that consists of violent, awe inspiring music and performance, Nothing Left to Lose grabs listeners from the first note and doesn''t let go. With influences ranging from Bad Religion, Pennywise, and Rise Against, this hardcore punk band quintet - consisting of Tyler Wakefield on vocals, Adam Christensen and Brent Young on guitar, Travis Weil on bass, and Brian Roe pounding the drums, have been playing together for over a year, and through those hours of practice have honed their sound to a whole new level.
Enter The Last Battle Hymn (Zero Youth Records 2005) --the latest release from the midwest''s most elite. The development of the new record was a solid process of creativity, deeper meaning, maturity, and broadening the horizons of the groups'' musicianship.
"We''ve always been happy with the stripped down sound that Punk and Hardcore was known for, and we have done well for ourselves with that ideal," explains guitarist and founding member Adam Christensen. "However, for the new record we weren''t satisfied with three chord songs and keeping it simple. With The Last Battle Hymn, the accessibility is still there, but now there''s much more going on."
With songs like: Ghost Town, My America, and Revolution--it''s virtually impossible to deny the political overtones of the bands music. Not to be pigeon-holed as a political group, Nothing Left To Lose has brought so much more to the lyrical aspect of their music. Emotion without being too weepy was one bold step, not to mention spirituality and integrity without being preachy. Usually hard to do, yet in this release is pulled of masterfully.
Armed with the elements of fundamental dynamics, Nothing Left To Lose has always thrived to take their music to the next step without compromising their message, ideals, or sound.
Nothing Left to Lose''s previous two efforts, Fight the Good Fight (Target Market Records 2002), and Together Forever Eternity (Drop10 Records 2003), the latter of which went out of print after quickly selling three thousand copies within fifteen months, have paved the way for their most mature sound yet.
Sharing the stage with acts like: The Toasters, One-21, Hanover Saints, The Blamed, Flatfoot 56, Headnoise, The Huntingtons, The Nekromantix, Roper, Officer Negative, Mercury Radio Theatre, The Elms, and Disciple have given this group of five friends the ability and the opportunity to forge their way ahead in a scene that is quickly drowning any hopes for originality.

Vocalist Tyler Wakefield has a great set of pipes, making the lyrics very easy to hear and enjoyable to listen to. I was very impressed by the way the group combines punk, hardcore, and metal guitar in a very lyrical way and has solid lyrics worth listening to. In addition to Wakefield on vocals, band members are Adam Christensen and Brent Young on guitars, Brian Roe on drums, and Travis Weil on bass. I really liked "Armies Rise" and "15,000 Dead". "I never heard of Bolivar, MO, until I read Nothing Left to Lose''s band biography. I learned that it''s in the southern part of the state and that it''s pronounced like "Oliver" (i.e., not "Bo-lee-VAR," the pronunciation I''d heard when referring to famous South American revolutionary Simon Bolivar). The group formed in 2001 but has just released its first full-length, THE LAST BATTLE HYMN (Zero Records). "Nothing Left to Lose played second continuing the great out pouring of punk. The band played a little like The Deal, giving touches of metal using triplet chugging and riffed out solos, and a dash of hard-core drive. The lead singer used his voice in the same way Glen Danzing did and gave it more of a crooning vibrato, aided with tight gang vocals. "A very solid performance from a band and label I was not familiar with and they are both in my state of Missouri. With titles like "Revolution" it seems obvious of the punk root. Fast paced drumming and a catchy raise-your-fist type chorus. The band is obviously musically talented pulling in great guitar riffs and hard bass lines like on "Saints". "Anchors and Angels" again brings the bass line to an obvious fix and great drumming would make this a great mosh pit song live. The band claims to be a hardcore punk band but I didn''t see much of that on more than the first half of the disc but the last half is where the band turns up the heat a bit and brings in a solid cd for hardcore fans. If you are looking for a talented and solid punk influenced album then check out these guys! Lyrically, the band shows their roots with many songs of redemption and hope. The band dives into God''s grace and salvation. The band also looks at the negative and low points in life but shows the way out. Also, several songs bring a political overtone with no clear direction on their agenda except that they are proud of their country and knowing that no matter what is currently happening it is still great and strong. Vocally, again this is where their is not much hardcore influence. All the songs are sung with a bit of aggression and style but no screaming or growling.
