Transgression features the jazz guitar duo of Mike Pardew and John Stowell. Throughout this album Pardew plays a steel string guitar while Stowell plays a nylon string guitar on seven of the tracks and a steel string guitar strung a major third lower in pitch on the remaining two songs. Pardew and Stowell met ten years ago as Pardew would attend Stowell''s performances around the Northwest and studied jazz guitar with Stowell. They continue to play together and perform. Thier CD release party was a big success at Vindalho in SE Portland, OR. Keep an eye out for their future performances at Vindalho throughout the rest of 2007.
Mike Pardew
Guitarist Mike Pardew maintains a regular performance schedule in several professional ensembles including The Cubist Quartet, Eleven Eyes, and as a solo artist. Eleven Eyes https://www.tradebit.com released two albums under New & Improv Music, Depth Perception (2003) and Scope (2005). The Eugene Weekly’s Best of Eugene selected Eleven Eyes as the “Best Jazz Band” in 2005 and again in 2006.

In addition to his work with Eleven Eyes, Mike Pardew has performed and recorded extensively as an accompanist. His compositions and guitar playing have been used on several commercials and video productions. He lived in Northern Spain in 2000-2001 teaching guitar and performing concerts as a solo artist throughout La Coruña, Oviedo, Pendueles, and Santander. Mr. Pardew, a student of Glen Griffith, Gary Versace and Steve Owen, has also had his own jazz compositions as well as arrangements performed by many jazz ensembles throughout the West Coast.

As a student at the University of Oregon, Mike was the recipient of the 2004 award for Outstanding Undergraduate Performer in Jazz Studies. Pardew graduated magna cum laude from the University of Oregon in 2004 with a bachelor of music in Jazz Studies and a bachelor of arts in Spanish Literature. Pardew also completed three intensive course programs for which he holds diplomas from the Universidad de Oviedo in Asturias (2000, 2001).

John Stowell
John Stowell began his successful career in the early 1970’s with private study with guitarist Linc Chamberland and pianist John Mehegan. Both men were valuable mentors to John, allowing him to play with them as he progressed in his development. Several years later he met bassist David Friesen in New York City, and they formed a duo that recorded and toured prolifically for seven years, with performances in the United States,Canada, Europe and Australia. The duo continues to perform thirty years after their first meeting.
In 1983, John and David joined flutist Paul Horn and Paul’s son Robin Horn (on drums) for a historic tour of the Soviet Union. This was the first time in forty years that an American jazz group had been invited to play public performances in Russia. In 1993, 1995, and 1998 John returned to Russia, playing in numerous cities. His two sold-out performances in Kursk may have been the first appearances there by an American jazz musician.
John continues to tour, record and teach internationally. He has been Artist-In-Residence at schools in Germany, Indonesia, Argentina, and in the United States and Canada. He served as assistant director and performer in Oregon Public Broadcasting’s PDX Jazz Summit in 1991, and since 1995 has been a contributing columnist for a number of magazines, including “Downbeat”, “Guitar Player”, Canadian Musician”, “Soundcheck” (Germany), and “Guitar Club” (Italy).
