"...the melodies ebb and flow from sweet and tender, like the patter of rain on a tin roof, progressing to a fever pitch, that sudden flash of light that catches you off guard even though you''re expecting it. sometimes there is a pause, when the thunder dissipates into the distance, only to return to its rhythmic pattern for another round."
Virginia singer/songwriter and guitarist Ryan Artrip has been playing and performing music in low-key intimate settings for years. In 2006 he entered a studio in Bristol, TN with six songs, a few hundred dollars, and an idea for a genuine acoustic record. In 4 short sessions “Minus Hollywood” the debut EP was born.
The record redefines new folk music with themes of sarcastic love, loss, social ill, death, drug-use, childhood, and life-reflection. The often string-driven songs give a real folk and traditional heart to the music while maintaining a dark, vivid, and emotional rock backbone. His influences of everybody from Gillian Welch to Bright Eyes bleed through as he mixes a truly creative musical blend of the guitar, mandolin, violin, piano, upright bass, and drums. Minus Hollywood is an endeavor of raw emotional honesty at the venue of acoustic poetry.
Ryan produced the EP and Mike Stephenson engineered and mastered it. Performing with him on the record are Josh Goforth, Nathaniel Sproles, Mike Stephenson, and Danny Ali.
