Critical Mass….Evolution..
John Menich and Brad Reamer originally founded a band called “Power Trip” in 1991. Keith Howard was added as the drummer along with bass player Tom Bishop. After many successful gigs in the Chicago area, they were well on their way to becoming one of Chicago’s hottest bands. A heavy rock band with a very funk influence, they definitely made their mark. However, a directional change in the bands style had been progressing, and unfortunately, as evolution goes, something had to change.
Now without a bass player, they continued on, more focused on new material, the bands style was really in the beginnings of change. A bass player was needed now more than ever to get things rolling. A call was placed by drummer Keith Howard to his brother Scott. A guitarist since age 8, Scott was asked if he would be interested. Being a huge fan of Power Trip, the response was immediate. Within a week’s time, Scott had bought a bass, amp, and auditioned for the band. Halfway through the first song of the audition, a nod by John to Brad had said it all. The evolution of the bands core members was complete, and Critical Mass would eventually become the name.
