We had a great time putting together the songs on our CD “Not Too Long Ago”. Some of the songs are upbeat, some profound, and some just fun! Yet nothing is surface level.
“Not Too Long Ago” is a collection of original songs that have been written and performed by Robin And The Giant (aka Robin MacBlane and Larry Whitler) over the years for both children and adults. Each version of each of these songs was recorded in early 2007. We hope that each of these songs evokes a memory of the adult’s youth or a memory of time shared with your children.
Children are so very precious. Time is so fleeting. We, as parents, seem to think that time with our children at a particular age will last forever. Time is forever. But particular ages are not. In a blink of an eye children are grown and off on their own. Moments shared between children and adults throughout their lifetimes are so very special.
The songs contained in "Not Too Long Ago" were written for children, but they are great songs for parents to listen to alone or with their children. Each of the songs has a story all it''s own.
The first song, “Music Box”, is from our song “Not Too Long Ago”. The feeling of a music box puts childhood into a loving perspective.
“Not Too Long Ago”, the song, was written as a reflection of the memories that we have when we were children. We still fly paper airplanes, eat cookies, and bicycle! These memories are shared as realities with our children.
“Takes A Little Work” is a feeling that follows us throughout out lifetime. “Just five more minutes, Mom.” We as children had that feeling of delaying getting up for school, our children experienced that feeling, and even now, as adults, we experience that feeling at times.
“Street Smart Cat” is a fun song! It illustrates the feeling of confidence in oneself and the ability to get things done on one’s own while others are just content depending on someone else for their needs and wants.
“When The Rain Falls” has an interesting inception. This was intended to be an exercise for us and it turned into a song! Everything always turns into a song when Larry picks up his guitar.
“My Springtime Song” was written for another themed collection of ours titled “Our Springtime Special” for the For Kids Only channel on Digital Cable Radio. The song (as with our songs) is not just surface level. Metaphors abound such as kites. “Whenever I fly my kite” is not just about flying kites.
When we wrote our stories for children for our radio show, we would follow each story with a song. Our song, “Fly”, was written to follow one of our stories which showed how a young boy wanted to play hockey but was told he was too small to be on the team. He did not listen to the naysayers and made the team. He related to the albatross, deemed by many to be unable to fly.
Most everyone is affected by crushes at some time or another. “Bitten By The Birds And Bees” depicts this. Sometimes one does not realize that true love is right in front of them.
“Straight From A Child” is a unique song unto itself as it seems to merge the feeling of two different eras. The megaphone sound gives that unique flavor. This sound was stumbled upon accidentally. Larry rolled up paper and was talking through it, making his son laugh with the megaphone sound. He then thought that this would be a cool sound for a song and “Straight From A Child” was born, projecting his voice through the paper onto the microphone. And what the song says is taken to heart by us as parents and acted upon every day.
“Quite A Catch Pete” is the newest song on our collection. Larry was inspired with the concept and the title and “Quite A Catch Pete” was born! It shows the love that dads have for their children, and how the love stays from generation to generation. And how much the children look forward to having their dads as part of their life, no matter what their age.
“Seven Questions” is typical Robin And The Giant dialogue. Whenever we create our radio shows for children, there are always stories and songs intertwined with our trademark style dialogue; never any quiet time. This piece of dialogue was written as part of our “Time To Travel” collection. The characters Robin And The Giant LOVE having fun, LOVE exploring our world, LOVE life!
“Forever Inside” is a song written for Robin’s children, T.J. and Shannon, when they were young children. In the beginning of the song, it may sound to the listener that it is as love song between a man and a woman. But it’s not. It is a love song that depicts the genuine love that a mom has for her children. Genuine love will always be there, no matter what. Even though T.J. and Shannon are now grown, I (Robin) can still see their tiny faces and their huge smiles and inquisitive eyes in my heart.
“We Love Campin’” was written by Larry as a reflection of his genuine love for his son, Alex. Some of Larry’s and Alex’s most favorite times that they looked forward to together was when they were camping. Larry always recorded their vacation moments on cassette tapes as they were happening. The dialogue interspersed throughout the song is from the actual cassette tape of the happening moments. “We Love Campin’” is the loving moment as it really happens and then the loving moment being replayed within the heart.
“Stay In School” is one of our most favorite songs! It is performed live by Larry and has a GREAT message. Sometimes people believe that in order to succeed they must know someone. Not true. Staying in school, following your dreams and making those dreams a reality is one’s true success! “Stay In School” was originally written for another of our one hour radio specials for the For Kids Only channel titled “Stay In School”.
“Forests Green” is a beautiful song with a very powerful message. Larry wanted to share this song in different languages. He asked his mother if she could translate “Forests Green” into Germen (his mother immigrating from Germany when she was a child), his friend Carmen if she could translate it into Spanish “Valles Verdes”, and a friend of his Mother’s who could translate it into Russian “Zerlyony Les”. Once the translations were complete, Larry and I recorded “Forests Green” with a chorus of children (our children, family members, and some of their friends) in the three languages. A huge endeavor that was appreciated by all!
“Magic Mother Nature” always makes us smile! Such a fun sounding song with a great message! Change should be embraced. How can one grow without experiencing change?
“Stand Up For The Children” is our favorite song on “Not Too Long Ago”! The feeling emitted from this song is the true reflection of the heart of Robin And The Giant. We do all that we can to make our world for children a free world, a safe world, a drug free world.
“Stand Up For The Children” was noticed and on October 4, 1989, “Stand Up For The Children” was entered into the Congressional Record Of The United States by U.S. Congressman Clifford B. Stearns.
