Carla R. approaches each day with a keen disregard to genres and convention, only content with breathing and writing.
Carla R. was born and raised in Greensboro, NC, a seemingly new hot spot for American Idol, but having yet to storm America with a real innovative creativity. Besides the late, great blues traveler Moses Rascoe her family was not all that musical. At six years old Carla was convinced after religiously watching the Friday night mess they called ‘Hee Haw’ week after week that a guitar would be cool -she became enthralled. Carla says “The first time I saw and heard ‘Batdance’ (Prince) I was sold on the idea of being a performer – without the straw hat.”
Carla studied piano formally and added trombone and tuba in the academic realm. Carla spent four years studying music at UNC-Chapel Hill and four seasons with the Marching Tarheels and earned her degree in Music (theory and comp.) in 2003. Her current peers at Dymond Productions and at local venues comment that they find her passionate and candid personality expressed with electric guitar to be exciting and clearly unprecedented.
Carla quickly learned that in the real world as a female instrumentalist and especially guitarist, she would have to play twice as loud and fearlessly as the boys to be taken seriously – for her, not a problem.
Carla’s influences include Prince, Miles Davis, Tina Turner, Queen, Thelonius Monk, James Brown, Motley Crue, Poison, Parliament and DeVante Swing. In response to the idea of blending together such an array of artists, she says, “because my parents had no preference or conviction for or against music whatsoever, it kept my curiosity about music pure and passionate – and haphazardly rebellious at times.”
Carla R.’s artistic originality and understated intensity evolved from a naïve undergraduate composer to an audacious guitarist/ singer to dynamic producer and performer – watch out.
