Details:
Born and raised in rural South Louisiana, an area rich in culture, Jason Harrington has been surrounded by a particular type of diversity throughout his life. However, it is the common thread which weaves it’s way through this melting pot that is the focus of his songwriting. By blurring the edges of genre and manipulating the rules of tradition, a sound is produced that is simultaneously strikingly fresh, and yet comfortably familiar.

This is the sound of Jason Harrington, and the foundation of his art.

After ten years of cutting teeth, Jason has released his first full-length album. The album Storm On The River, released by Right Note Records and Publishing, debuted in early 2007 after Harrington filling the better half of 2006 with extensive studio work. A rich wealth of area talent formed an ample pool from which to draw an alchemistic stew of side-men. The chemistry achieved throughout these sessions is unmistakable and further strengthens the idea of commonality amongst difference. This chemistry is effectively conjured with each formation, producing a live performance both captivating and empowering. It is the intention of this group to promote, through performance, the compositions embodied on Storm On The River, and earn the attention of a mixture of markets.

Jason Harrington began his songwriting career in the mid-nineties as an angst ridden youth shouting out songs against the clash of electric guitars. Though experiencing heavy exposure to the cultural music of South Louisiana, as well as a large backlog of artists from preceding decades, the effects of these influences were buried away in an attempt to discover new possibilities in sound and song. It wasn’t until a decade of songwriting had passed that these influences were welcomed and invited into the songs that were to come. Parallels to Jason’s songwriting have been drawn to artist such as Tom Waits, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. The distinction remains in that the raw emotion which was so vital to Jason’s earlier musical endeavors has survived, and supports the performances of songs which are crafted now by a far more seasoned mind.

The effect of this music is that by taking such deep influence and a sincere digestion and appreciation of past styles, Jason Harrington manages to continue the lineage of the history of songwriting down an alternate path than that of mainstream commercial music, while still retaining a familiarity that is inviting to new listeners. The strength of the songwriting when coupled with top-line production and capable side-men, produces a musical experience that at times can seem visual as well as physical, all while remembering to be pleasing to the ear.

At its heart, “Storm On The River” is a singer songwriter album, and the direction of each song was considered in depth before the final arrangements were decided. In spite of the diversity of sounds and styles embodied therein, a synthesis is achieved and the record and performances flow with unity and consistency. The resulting experience is one of fluctuation amongst an axis. The viewer/listener is invited to shift from elated to subdued, then from engulfed to relieved. By exploring themes of intense paranoia, to the frailty of perception and finally transcendental release, Jason Harrington zeroes in on the human condition.
