What do you get when you have 28 days to write and record 10 songs? Well, that was the challenge set out by the 2007 Record Production Month (RPM) Challenge and this CD is mostly a result from that effort. But then you say, “Hey the nifty title “7 days/ ten songs + 2” doesn’t seem to explain it that way.” Well, give me a minute and let me try to explain it better.
We began work February 2nd 2007 and we finished the writing, arranging, and recording, for the original work to meet the deadline of March 1st 2007. But we believed we might also have something more to share with others. So after we mailed the original ten songs off to the folks in New Hampshire, we decided to make a CD out of it. Simple enough, eh?
But then what would we call it?
Hmm…I shared the concept with mix/ mastering engineer Tim Dolbear, He though about it for a couple minutes, then asked a seemingly strange question. He asked, “How long did it take to actually make…in real time…bankers hours…would you guess about a week?” I though about it for a minute or two and said, “Yeah, that’s about right.” He said, “Call it 7 days/ ten songs.”
The simplicity seemed brilliant but, because of the time constraints with the RPM Challenge, I ended up singing most everything. Well, I’m a likeable guy and my voice is…well…unique (?) but I figured you’d probably much rather hear my wife Ali sing, so we decided to add a couple more songs. I had two songs featuring Ali that hadn’t been recorded for RPM, so I thought it might be a good idea to add them to this project…
I said to Tim, “How about ‘7days/ ten songs + 2’?”…and so that, my friend(s), is how I can describe nature and the name for this album. The contest set out by the 2007 Record Production Month challenged us to write and arrange many of the songs “on the spot”; even the re-written songs had new sections somewhat spontaneously added. Perhaps that may also shed light as to why “7 days” has so much variety… If you are a songwriter I highly recommend you to look into the RPM Challenge this year or next.
