CALL THE RAIN REVIEW

Featuring the track the should have been on the Spider-Man soundtrack and a song that has a 75% success rate of turning on the tears, Spirit Creek''s 5-song EP "Call The Rain" sets a standard of what melodic power rock should hope to be. Guitar-rock anthems mix with heartfelt ballads to provide a backdrop for insightful and personal songwriting.

To fully appreciate Spirit Creek, time must be spent on the band''s web site. Founder and front-man Doug Shea''s personal diary provides insight to the music that adds another level to the listening experience. The searching ''Is There Someone Out There'' applies to anyone wondering if there is someone out there just for them. The track takes on new meaning, however, when taken in context with Shea''s personal struggles maintaining a relationship under a steady burden/blessing of life on the touring road.

The guitar-driven ''...and together'' inspires, and rightly so, considering it was penned specifically for the Spiderman movie soundtrack. Reading about Shea''s fascination with the super hero, the track''s exclusion from the soundtrack becomes almost criminal. Commenting on the realization that the song didn''t make the final cut, he states "I just wish that sometimes, someone would stand up for people that believe in something so strongly, they would die for it." Not sure if ol'' Spidey deserves the sacrifice, but the underlying sentiment is admirable.

''Why Ask Why'' is the epitome of tear-jerk storytelling. Depicting the tragedy of a young couple with only months left together due to terminal illness, the impact of the song took me by surprise. The first spin caught me in a most un-male moment, blubbering like a guy hog-tied to the front row of a chick-flick festival. Shea''s vocals cut like a knife, driving home classic lines such as "Will you love me the rest of my life?... No, I won''t love you the rest of yours. I will love you the rest of mine." *sniff* It still gets me.

Spirit Creek has garnered a much-deserved loyal fan base through rigorous and persistent touring. With powerful and passionate songwriting, "Call The Rain" demonstrates that they are teetering right on the edge of being discovered.
