JAZZ: Smooth Jazz, LATIN: Latin Jazz

Details:
Regional guitarist/composer Frank Calvagna teamed up with some of Chicago''s finest Jazz musicians and has released his debut Latin Jazz CD. In addition to being a busy regional player, Frank appears on several recordings including on a 2003 Tom Mac solo CD produced by and featuring grammy award winning drummer Paul Wertico (Pat Metheny) as well as Jazz legend Stanley Jordan.

Frank''s self-produced CD, A Journey Through Castolon, was recorded in Chicago and includes seven original and two cover tunes. The original material exhibits a variety of styles including carribean, bossa nova and samba. This melody laden collection is best described as playful and nonpretentious music that is well within the reach of even the most casual Jazz listener. The original music is a cross between the melody driven compositions of contemporary groups such as Acousitic Alchemy and traditional jazz artists such as Jobim. With a total play time of about 55 minutes this collection is sure to set the background for a perfect evening. Many people who have already purchased this CD claim it creates a relaxing atmosphere for the workplace or home.

The disc includes an amazing performance by saxophonist Mark Colby (Hallmark Records). Mark has performed with many greats including Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Haden, Frank Sinatra, and Ramsey Lewis. "Initially, when I wrote Along The Rio Grande, I had that Stan Getz sound in mind" says Frank. " After hearing Mark play, I knew that he had to be the one to play that melody". Mark also appears on several other cuts throughout the CD.

Also included are lively performances by Chicago pianists Frank Caruso and Jose Valdes. Brazilian percussionist Dede Sampaio (Miles Davis, Lionel Hampton, etc) gives life to several of the tunes. Of particular significance is his amazing work on Bordertown. Says Frank: "For Bordertown, I was looking to create a classic western movie feel. Dede''s traditional instruments created interesting sound effects that added a whole new dimension to the song. In spots you really feel like you are walking through a lonely desert and any minute Clint Eastwood will appear". El Matador, an upbeat samba, includes an unmatched trumpet solo by Chicagoan Rob Parton. A few local favorites from the northern Illinois area also appear on the CD including Marcelo Petti (drums), Fernando Zumbado (Bass) and Curt Bocek (trumpet)

The cover song Carnival Time is a new arrangement of a tune written by the great guitarist Jimmy Bruno. The tune appears as a live cut on a recording by the late guitarist Tommy Tedesco. A smoothed out version was added to this CD as a homage to the guitarist who served as an inspiration to Frank. "The tune is beautiful , the group did a fantastic job" says Dale Tedesco, California music publisher and son of Tommy Tedesco. "This is just the way I always thought the song should be".

Also included in the disc is a unique Latin/swing arrangement of the Disney song, Chim Cheree. This is definitely a refreshing new interpretation the Mary Poppins classic. The song begins with a somber fingerstyle guitar performance by Frank, flows into a classical flavored duet with Chicago flutist Jim Massoth then eventually launches into a lively Latin swing.
