Details:
The Acoff Family is a gospel music group based in Bessemer, Alabama, which is about 15 miles west of Birmingham. The group has been singing together as a family for over 25 years. The original group started in the late 1960’s and consisted of our Mother, the Late Mrs. Mary L. Winfield Acoff, and two of our sisters, Linda Acoff Johnson and the Late Janice L. Acoff. Mother played the piano and Linda and Janice were the vocalists. They received numerous invitations to perform at various churches.

Mother, Linda and Janice later taught the younger ones to sing in harmony. During our youth, we sang in the choirs at our church, Petty’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church; the Birmingham District Youth Choir; background vocalists for Mrs. Jo Anna Massey on her album; and with numerous other choirs throughout the Birmingham Metropolitan area.

In the early 1980’s, Linda had the vision for our family to form a singing group modeled after Walter Hawkins and the Hawkins Family. The Acoff Family Singers originally consisted of Valerie, Viola, Sharon, Roosevelt Jr., Cassandra, Alfedo, Carl Sr., and Linda and her children Kimberly and Rushton Jr. Toward the mid-80’s we met Ben Massey, and he became our permanent musician. Later, we added a few non-family members to the group and changed the name to Acoff and Company.

For the next few years Acoff and Company traveled all over the Southeast performing at various events. One of group’s last performances was at Alabama A&M University in 1984. As people began to graduate from high school and college and establish careers and families, the group eventually dissolved.

In 2003, God led the siblings to reunite the group with their adult children. The message from God was both restoration of the old generation and ushering in a new generation. In August 2003, the group performed for the first time in nearly two decades at the North Alabama Conference Evangelism Revival at Anderson Temple A.M.E. Zion Church. Shortly afterwards, God gave the group the vision for this CD and the title “About the Father’s Business.” Our Reunion Concert was held on November 7, 2004, at Petty’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

By the providence and direction of God, the group was reunited with Ben Massey to record this CD. The group commenced recording in August of 2005. Through this recording project, God awakened creative gifts in the family. All the songs, except one, were written by members of the group. On this CD project, the group consists of five (5) siblings and their nieces.
