STEP BACK SEVERAL YEARS…
I play an acoustic guitar. I have had a thing about ‘Ovation’ guitars ever since I first saw one shimmering in a shop window, back in Sydney, as I was growing up. I actually think of them as works of art. Since I have been ‘on the move’, I have been fortunate enough to come across and collect a few Ovation guitars. In fact, at last count I had 8. How wonderful it would be if having more guitars made you a better player. Alas, this is not so, and on I shall go as the eternally optimistic strummer, that I am.
I have no delusions about my skill with a guitar, but I have noticed that once I am up on a stage I do tend to let rip and any inhibitions tend to fade away. I have played several gigs where you share the stage with other acts and I warn them that if things are going well they had better get a long hook ready, to drag me off stage. Never would I call myself selfish, just…… enthusiastic.
This album was a learning curve from the second I walked into my friends ‘basement’ and saw a microphone mounted on a stand, hidden inside a wooden room. We used to have to run upstairs between the basement and the lounge to listen to the tracks. All I did was laugh, strum and sing and then sing again until I managed to stay in key! This was well over 10 years ago. I am happy to say that my friend’s recording studio has grown and moved and these days it is the digital domain we play in. Not quite as ‘warm’ as the old stuff, but definitely more crisp and clear.
These songs are part of my life. Most of them make me smile and one (The best years) is as applicable to my life now as it was over a decade ago. Long may we look at life as a journey, not just a destination.
