Upon meeting Gina Ferrera, the first thing you''ll notice is her infectious energy & enthusiasm. It permeates every aspect of her dialogue, mannerisms and view of the world. Yes, the lady is alive. The second thing you''ll notice is the sincerity with which she goes about crafting her music. Her first solo album "Blended Beat"…"a charmingly naive gem of a record"- (Global Village Idiot Webzine, 2004), features Gina on vocals, gyil, drums & percussion and appearances by guest artists. It captures the essence of African rhythm, while expressing Ferrera''s own vocal style and artistic approach (Engine-Studios, Brooklyn). Her New York based band, Blended Beat. is expecting the new album, Life in the Key of "G", to be released in the fall, 2005 (Engine-Studios). Gina has recorded and toured internationally (U.K., Europe& Canada) playing drums with the afro-beat band, KOKOLO. As a performer and educator, she has established "Gina''s Gyil & World Music Magic" to conduct workshops & classes at various venues, schools & civic centers. Gina is a teaching artist, that has been perfecting the art of "creative dramatics & improvisational play" including movement and storytelling, using percussion instruments, most specifically, the gyil, shekere and mbira.
